PostSubject: UK Weather reports & discussion, February.   Tue Feb 08, 2011 6:25 am

Well, after a weekend of wind and rain, this week will see things calming down a little, but remaining on the wet and breezy side for most, mainly windy to western and northern areas.

This graphic sets the trend for this week, with LP systems trying to attack the UK, but being kept at bay by HP sitting over Europe. These LP systems will bring fronts across the UK bringing periods of rain, topping up the levels in northern parts where we have already seen a lot of rain lately with high river levels, but tend to swirl northwards as they approach the western coasts.

Nothing really of any note yet, unless the HP over Europe gives in and lets these systems move further towards land.

Plus the faintest whiff of a will it, won't it scenario as HP could very well set up shop in Scandi [whispers] to allow some chance of an Scandinavian easterly.

I'm not sold on the idea, as tempting as it is to get swallowed up in the OMG LOOK AT THAT! type excitement but given the Nov/Dec past? It would be pretty amazing o end this season on a snowfest.

If a chart like this was sitting +96z away, then sure - pass me a bath towel and mop. But it's not. I expect many more charts to water down the current version (as the 18z GFS did, as opposed to the 12z chart attached) based on the fact I couldn't possibly believe this would happen. Not after the mega snow of Nov/Dec.

Yeah deffo Kent, if that HP does stay still then we could see that colder air being dragged back in. You can clearly see there isn't as much blue as we saw in Dec, those warmer colours edging further north when they can.

I might see if I can get a graphic from my PC of the December stuff, and compare it to that of yours... be interesting to see the differences. Surprised

A level 2 advisory has been issued for much of the UK during Sunday due to heavy rain. This is associated with an occluded front moving in from the West.

Rainfall in most areas due to be around 4mm/hr.

The SW could see a heavy shower or two during the morning as a plume of cold air moves in. Not expecting anything spectacular but could give some short sharp bursts. A small area of Cape is present at around 600, with LI around -2, with steeper lapse-rates due to this colder air aloft.

Again, the SW has a chance of a rumble or two with a bit of instability present. Some showers could be on the heavy side.

currently looking at radar and it looks like quite a heavy band of rain moving north between Exeter and Plymouth. Ju should have a chance of a rumble or two.

Yeah he is in the right place again today, even to get some nice convective cloud shots - that's my aim today. There were some lovely weak anvils around yesterday late afternoon, but no camera in hand! lol

nothing but grey murk here, Suspect i was playing golf yesterday and there was some nice shallow convection around. Im eager as hell to get some good shots this year and cant wait till the camera comes out again. I dont fancy playing golf with a camera round the neck, could be a tad awkward!! lol!

The one bit of slight excitement in our weather for a long time.....some mammatus clouds formed quickly this afternoon and disappeared just about as quick too!! Thought we might have heard some rumbles but nothing...back to sunshine mostly. Just a quick "fly past"! Very Happy But it jolted some weather interest!! Exclamation

We had an absolutely stonking morning here.. clear blue skies and very light winds. Went for a walk with the wee one at the local country park. Almost felt like spring (despite the ground frost).

But by lunchtime it had clouded over and now the rain has set in and looks set to stick around all night/tomorrow morning. Oh well, good thing we made the most of when while we could! Smile

I am now going to carry my camcorder in the car when I use it ..

Went to pick my Eldest up from School and was stood there chatting to a couple of the Mums when I looked up to the Sky ...

There on the edge of the cloud-front was a small funnel rapidly rotating .. We all stopped chatting and watched this rotating as it approached us .. then it roped out and we had 5p sized hail!

3 windscreens damaged and a few people were stung by the hail but there is no other rotation in the Clouds so I'm gutted!

Starting to kick off here
